CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

AMaGA has been overwhelmed with enquires about the conference. We have been busy making changes to allow more voices to be heard and a wider audience to attend. We invite you to submit an abstract for the opportunity to share your work, ideas, research and collaborations at the 2022 conference. The call for abstracts is now closed and results will be announced in December 2021.

Before submitting your abstract, please:

  • Familiarise yourself with the conference themes and presentation types (listed below)
  • Complete the abstract template, ensuring there are no spelling or grammatical errors (this document will be made available for delegates' viewing during the conference via the conference app) and that the contact details listed on the template are ones you are happy to be made public (can be social media links, generic organisation emails, or direct details)
  • Create an account in the abstract portal, and follow the instructions to submit your abstract. Abstracts can be saved as DRAFT, but must be finalised in order to be assessed for inclusion in the program
  • The same account may be used to submit multiple abstract submissions.

#HearUsNow powerfully affirms the urgency of this moment and the chance for action, it is a powerful statement with a sense of urgency. #HearUsNow captures the key conversations we wish to explore at the 2022 conference, building upon discussions that occurred throughout 2020 and 2021, which require urgent attention from us all.Presenters will be asked to demonstrate how their submission is relevant to one/all of the below sub-themes.

HEAR.

Explores the developments, challenges and opportunities for connecting with communities in this time.

  • To what extent is the rapid uptake of technology from 2020 influencing how we engage with communities?
  • How has the changing relationship between in-person and virtual modes of delivery influenced collections management?
  • What outstanding projects have risen from the challenging environment of 2020/2021?
  • If travelling exhibitions can’t travel, where will galleries source exhibits from?

US.

Celebrates the many voices to be heard, embracing truth-telling, stewardship of culture, decolonisation and rewriting stories. 

  • What impact is arts and culture having on crises like social cohesion and mental health?
  • Who and how are we advocating for the importance of cultural heritage and collections?
  • Who is leading practice in First Nations stewardship in Australia and surrounding nations? 
  • Is this current moment a tipping point in how Australia represents itself through cultural institutions and production? 

NOW.

Expresses the urgency of issues such as climate change, environmental devastations and political upheavals impacting the arts, culture, and heritage.

  • Where has there been genuine change to respectfully and meaningfully present previously inappropriate or traumatic cultural appropriation?
  • What are the global ethical issues of urgency that the cultural sector must respond to?
  • What impact are arts-based protests having on climate change discussions?
  • How can cultural institutions across the Indian Ocean Rim unite to amplify their advocacy for change?

NEXT.

Encourages emerging research, career pathways, and new learning. 

  • What are the unspoken ideas we need to explore?   
  • What is the future of funding or new and ethical institutional structures? 
  • What succession planning is being modelled for smaller or volunteer cultural organisations?  
  • Who are the ‘curators’ of the next generation? 


To ensure a dynamic and engaging conference there will be a range of different presentation formats available. If you have a proposal that is not represented here, please contact the Program Committee to discuss your idea.

Practical, hands on sessions that encourage participant engagement, interaction and discussion. May be used for audience testing or peer feedback/critique of projects. 

More than one facilitator may present. Must provide an outline of the session structure including proposed outcomes and how they will empower the audience to participate.
Performance20 + 10min Q&A
Theatrical or creative presentation of work i.e. dance, song, poetry, film screening, demonstration. 

May be shorter than 20 mins to accommodate engagement or expanded Q&A. 
Critique couch5min pitch + 10min critiquePitch an idea to the Conference's industry expert panel in front of an audience. 5min pitch may include AV presentation and/or demonstration, tools, collateral. 10min panel critique will include constructive feedback from the panel to further flesh out your idea. 
Poster -PDF poster to be made available digitally at the conference (via the app and interactive LCD screens). Potential opportunity to include a 3min oral only presentation to accompany the poster in the virtual conference platform. 



Abstracts will be assessed by the conference Program Committee using the following criteria:

  • Appeal
  • Clarity of purpose
  • Clarity of writing
  • The extent to which the proposal engages/entertains/encourages audience participation
  • Originality
  • Relevance to the sector
  • Relevance to the theme overall theme and sub-themes, HEAR. US. NOW. NEXT.
The final program will be determined by fluid approach with the primary goal of delivering a valuable and engaging experience for delegates and speakers alike. 

The Program Committee will use its discretion to consider issues such audience appeal, mix of content and balancing informal vs deeper content.

If your abstract is accepted you must agree to register and pay the Early Bird Registration price.

  3. Click SUBMIT ABSTRACT at the top of this page and create an account in the abstract portal
  4. Follow further instructions in the portal to load your abstract and complete your submission
  5. You may submit more than one abstract all under the same account. 


Before commencing your application, please note the following:

  • Abstracts must be submitted using this template
  • You may submit more than one abstract all under the same account
  • Submissions must be written in English. If you need translation assistance, please contact amaga@conlog.com.au
  • Online submission is the only method of abstract submission
  • Submissions can be saved as Draft in the abstract portal but must be finalised to be considered
  • Abstracts submitted for presentation will be published exactly as received and should be checked for spelling and grammar prior to submission
  • It is the responsibility of the presenter/author to ensure that the abstract is submitted correctly. For assistance with submissions, contact amaga@conlog.com.au
  • It is the responsibility of the presenter/author to ensure their abstract explains how it relates to the themes 
  • Where there is more than one presenter all correspondence will be sent to the person who submitted the abstract
  • Every effort will be made to accommodate the presenter / author presentation preference however the Program Committee reserves the right to allocate the presentation to best suit the program
  • The invitation to submit an abstract does not constitute an offer to pay travel, accommodation or registration costs associated with the Conference. Similarly, no presenter fee is paid to successful presenters
  • If your abstract is accepted, all speakers must agree to register and pay the Early Bird Registration price.
