John McKenna

Empowerment advocate and active inclusion advisor


With over 60 years of lived experience with a physical disability as a result of arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC) and scoliosis, John McKenna has dedicated his life to advocacy and empowering others. John has a deep passion for listening to people's stories and has spent more than 30 years working as an empowerment advocate, engaging with individuals and families across all sectors of his community. John also has lived experience with pressure injuries and medical conditions, such as Diabetes,  that impact his capacity to heal. 

As an active inclusion advisor, John frequently consults with government representatives, service providers, and academic researchers. His advisory role played a significant part in the establishment of Australia's National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), one of the most ambitious social policy reforms for people with disabilities and their families. Additionally, he collaborated with Australia's major telecommunications provider to develop accessible communication solutions for seniors and people with disabilities. His recent work has focused on areas such as:

  • Palliative care and Voluntary Assisted Dying,
  • Restricted Practices,
  • Assistive and inclusive technology,
  • Inclusive sport and recreation, and
  • The intersection of disability and aged care.

Throughout Johns' career, he has shared his perspectives on disability both as someone with lived experience and as a professional advocate. His contributions have spanned various platforms, including:

  • Co-producing and hosting "No Limits," a disability-focused TV program on Channel 31,
  • Delivering presentations nationally and internationally,
  • Creating video training for government agencies,
  • Founding and producing the "Guess What I've Discovered" YouTube channel,
  • Hosting and producing multiple podcast programs,
  • Serving on the boards of not-for-profit disability service providers,
  • Contributing to academic reports and publications.

John also runs his own consulting practice, Better Access Consulting.
