Miss Porter's HouseWednesday 17 May 2023 Miss Porter's House offers a rare glimpse of ordinary family life, filled with a century of furnishings and personal items, it tells Porter stories from 1909 to 1997. The house was built by Herbert Porter whose family ran a business in Newcastle's Hunter Street. In 1910 Herbert and his new bride Florence Jolley moved in. The family, including two daughters, Ella and Hazel, lived in the house for the whole of their lives. Sadly, Herbert was a victim of the 1919 influenza epidemic and died at the age of 41. His last surviving daughter Hazel died in 1997 leaving the house and its contents to the National Trust. Miss Porter's House provides a living snapshot of women's lives in twentieth century Newcastle. | |
