Dai Trang Le is the first Vietnamese refugee to be elected to the 47th Parliament of Australia as the first Independent Federal Member for Fowler, a division of Western Sydney that was named after Lilian Fowler, the first female mayor in Australia.
Dai, her mother and two younger sisters resettled in Australia in December 1979 after years in refugee camps in Southeast Asia after the fall of Saigon in April 1975. This journey shaped her as a passionate storyteller, first as a journalist for the Liverpool and Fairfield Champion and then at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
After decades of reporting on the stories that impacted her community, Dai stepped into the world of politics in 2012 where she was elected to Fairfield City Council. In 2022, Dai became the first woman of Vietnamese refugee heritage to win the safe Labor seat of Fowler.
