Dr Carmel Hobbs

Dr Carmel Hobbs is a researcher and educator specialising in youth intimate partner violence (IPV), trauma-informed practice, and socially just schooling. 

She is the Acting Director of the Trauma Informed Practice lab at the University of Tasmania and maintains an adjunct lecturer position in public health at La Trobe University. In addition to her academic roles, Dr Hobbs has contributed significantly to the community sector and government. She previously served as a social researcher at Anglicare’s Social Action and Research Centre where she conducted groundbreaking research on youth intimate partner violence. Her government experience includes a role in the Strategic System Improvement team at the Department of Education at the peak of the covid pandemic. She is the Chair of the Story Island Project, and Deputy Chair of the Youth Network of Tasmania. 

In 2023, Dr. Hobbs was recognized as one of Australia's Top 5 early career researchers by the ABC. Her research has gained national attention and influenced the development of assessment and safety planning tools, training for professionals, service provision, professional practice and educational programs. Throughout her career she has demonstrated a deep commitment to bridging the gap between academic research and social change. This is underpinned by her dedication to upholding child rights and social justice principles, prioritising the voices and lived experience of children, young people, and the professionals who work with them.
