Dr Anton Symkovych is a Senior Lecturer in Criminology at the University of Melbourne. Anton is an internationally recognised prison scholar whose research examines carceral order and penal subjectivities across the Global North, Global South, and Global East. Over the last 20 years, he has conducted in-depth studies in men’s and women’s prisons in England, South Africa, and Ukraine, with a focus on issues of gender, power, and legitimacy. Before his academic career, Anton practiced as a mental health intern in a juvenile hall and as a social worker in a group home for teenage boys on parole in California.
